the Bowditch Curve (Lissajous)

He wrote "The American Practical Navigator" in 1802.  It's still carried on board every US Navy vessel.  He was the first American actuary.  He taught himself French and Latin in order to translate the great books of the time.

And in the course of his "self-directed study", he came upon what we now know as "Lissajous Curves", who developed them independent of Nathaniel Bowditch many years later.

We'll take a look at a couple of ways of recreating these neat designs, in addition to a couple of other items.

"Chuck’s car is traveling at 65.0m/s when he suddenly accelerates his car at 15.0m/s2 for 3.00s. How far did Chuck, and his car, travel while he was accelerating?"    Answer this problem - WITHOUT FORMULAS.

Though I know little about physics,

the simple spreadsheet can set me free from figurative chains of ignorance."

The Euler Spiral

"Draw a straight line, and then continue it for the same length but deflected by an angle. If you continue doing this you will eventually return to roughly where you started. But what happens if you increase the angle of deflection by a fixed amount at each step?"

THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS

and the Birthday Problem

Had Pickett's Charge succeeded at Gettysburg, we probably wouldn't be recognizing the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address today, and who knows how the Civil War would have turned.

Why did Pickett's Charge fail?

"Looking up the valley towards Gettysburg, the hills on either side were capped with crowns of flame and smoke, as 300 guns, about equally divided between the two ridges, vomited their iron hail upon each other.”

A FOLLOW-UP NOTE ON OUR LAST =EQUALS= MEETING

We tried to understand the rainbow, and ended up talking about the electro-magnetic field in outer space?  I ran across this Quantum Physics article today, and it reminded me of the E8 design on the right.  I don't understand much of it, but it's some pretty neat stuff!

A Jewel at the Heart of Quantum Physics

Artist’s rendering of the amplituhedron, a newly discovered mathematical object resembling a multifaceted jewel in higher dimensions. Encoded in its volume are the most basic features of reality that can be calculated — the probabilities of outcomes of particle interactions.

"IS THIS THE FABRIC OF THE UNIVERSE?"

At the most basic level, the calculation is an arcane investigation of symmetry – in this case of an object that is 57 dimensional, rather than the usual three dimensional ones that we are familiar with. Although this object was first discovered in the 19th century. there is evidence that it could contain the structure of the cosmos.

YOU WILL NEVER LOOK AT THE WORLD THE SAME

I saw a rainbow while watering the lawn.  You've seen them, too.  We know the name "rainbow", but do we know anything about them?  Let's go beneath the name and see what we can find out, with a little effort.

We'll program a simple wave, and in actually doing that simple step (whether on the computer or on paper), we'll confront an obvious question that will change how you look at the world!

SPREADSHEET

I SEE A RAINBOW.
How is a rainbow formed?
This is Strange         So is This         And This!
We've stopped, observed something simple, and tried to explain it.  And this simple step can really get us going!
How are colors different?
How does light travel?
SOMETHING IS MISSING SOMEWHERE!

IT'S THIS!

These explanations may be right, partially right, or wrong.  However, I've got something on the table to play with, and that's most important.

This research not only explodes in all directions, but one sees the power of general principles, which can help explain an infinite variety of observations!

Why do colors bend differently when they hit something?
Why is "red" on top of the spectrum?
How do wavelengths interact with the atmosphere?
Why is the sky blue?
Why does the stick appear bent in water?
Why do painters wear white shirts?
How is light absorbed?
How is light emitted from the sun?
How can light be both waves and particles?
What is the nature of light?
How does the stealth bomber work?
How does photosynthesis work?

I also know I'm missing something that will take all of this not just to the next level, but to the nth level!

And am I suppose to be able to figure all this out?  I'm starting to think --- yes, when there's a structure to it!  However, there are people out there experts in these fields already, wishing there was a platform for them to share their knowledge …

A COUPLE THOUGHTS

These explanations aren't perfect.  In fact, there's probably some error in here somewhere.  That's OK!  Because if we're serious about understanding reality and honest with ourselves, we'll catch the error somewhere else, and figure out where we've erred.

And how far would we have gotten had we started with "Light is both a wave and a particle.  The different colors of the spectrum have different wavelengths", blah blah blah.  Not very far.

START WITH REALITY AND WE'LL QUICKLY HIT GENERAL PRINCIPLES!

And a Simple Principle Can Go a Long Way ...

AND A CHALLENGE FOR YOU

Come with an idea, a thought, something in your classroom, something you've seen, or a question.  SOMETHING.  And if you can’t come, e-mail it to me.

What is lightning?  Why does the balloon rise?  I flip a switch and the light turns on.  The airplane rises.  The bee is attracted to the flower.  How does a toilet flush?  The lightning bug lights in the night.  What is wind?  How does a cell phone work?

These are just examples.  A goal is to back into the math involved in understanding these.

If you want, e-mail the idea(s) as well!

Felix Baumgartner and the Speed of Sound

APRIL 2012 MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

A CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT

=EQUALS= first met in October, 2010.  The remarkable Benoit Mandelbrot was interested!  "For years, I have been waiting for an initiative like yours."  But he sadly passed away, days before our first meeting.

He included in an e-mail, just before he passed away, this note: "One question I want to ask you is whether you are going on with your program and wish you good luck."

The math in the Mandelbrot Set is accessible to students / teachers of all ages and abilities.  EVERYBODY CAN DO THIS!  Yes - in the spreadsheet!

As we head into the summer, I'd like to have this project on the table - with time to play around with it, create your own images, etc.

And meet again!  A MANDELBROT CELEBRATION!
